"A brilliant stage play now becomes a witty, worldly-wise delightful screen surprise!"

Josef is the loyal servant of Count Alfred von Rommer. The servant has in the count, in the field of flirting, a good teacher. He accompanies him on a visit to Count and Countess Von Rischenheim. Once at their villa in Monte Carlo, Josef falls in love with Marie, the Count and Countess Von Rischenheim's servant. However, he thinks she is of nobility and she mistakenly mistakes him for the Count Von Rommer. Josef's boss is also on the love path.

Lighter than light, but made with a great deal of fun and even more charm. A perfect mix of comedy of errors, comedy of manners, and rom-com, with someone in the director’s chair whose reputation these days rests on classic Universal horrors like Frankenstein and The Old Dark House instead of the usual suspects like Ernst Lubitsch or Rouben Mamoulian. Nor would I expect Paul Lukas (still a wonderfully ambiguous figure to me in The Lady Vanishes) to play Josef, but then again, it doesn’t surprise me that he falls for the beautiful Elissa Landi, and Nils Asther makes a very convincing prince. There are lovely little visual gags, for example, when two characters walk past a group of trees arguing, only to emerge from behind them flirting a moment later. The only mystery is why the main characters are called Josef and Marie, but I don’t think I have to look much into that. Very nice comedy, currently on YouTube.
