I have never read the books, but this first part is undoubtedly recommended.
Mario Adorf made his acting debut with this film. Don't expect the standard war film with lots of action and violence. The film largely focuses on soldier life during World War II. At times there is also some humor incorporated.
The entire trilogy has been released on DVD here in the Netherlands.
