Abschiedsdisko plot

When his first girlfriend dies, Henning is just 15 years old. In order to mourn in peace, he decides to travel to his grandfather one last time. His grandfather lives on the edge of an area where lignite is mined. There Henning witnesses decay and destruction. The excavators to extract the lignite eat their way imperturbably through the landscape and destroy the village where his grandfather lives. Henning's grandfather, however, refuses to move into a nursing home. Henning roams the mining area and meets all kinds of other people. The local disco of his grandfather's village is also on the verge of closing. Henning decides to plant a symbolic tree and a disco is held one more time.

This must have been about the last film to roll out of the East German Defa studio. The 'Wende' was imminent, the GDR was defunct. Still, this is a remarkably fresh and topical film even today. It is about the lignite industry that turns landscapes upside down and sacrifices villages to this polluting fuel, which also continues in today's Germany.

In this case it is about a young boy who lives near the excavations and wants to visit his grandfather who lives in a village that is being given over to lignite mining. The village is already deserted, except for a few old people who don't want to leave. The boy's father is tasked with completing the eviction. Necessary for progress, he thinks. Inhumane policy, says the boy. He wanders through the village, encounters all sorts of strange figures and two girls are chasing him. The film is loosely put together. No heavy arguments. Here and there some fantasy images. A last disco, as a farewell to the village. A nice movie though. And still current. Recently there was another village that was sacrificed to the lignite industry.
