Yegor Prokudin is a kid from the streets and grew up in youth gangs. The many years of his life in prison have spoiled his enjoyment of life. In prison Lyuba, a country girl, sends him letters to cheer him up and gradually he regains his old zest for life. When he is fired, he goes to her and tries to adapt to rural life for her. However, his mates from his old, criminal life don't want to leave him alone.

One of the most popular films in the Soviet Union. Completely unknown in the West, except for Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who included it in his top 10 of best films. The story is about a criminal who has just been released from prison and decides to relax with the pen pal he wrote to in prison. It takes a while, but slowly he starts to appreciate life in the small village. Fantastically beautiful camera images and the film also has a kind of Fassbinder atmosphere. Only here we are not in the FRG but in the USSR. Sometimes it also tends a bit towards the Toon Kortooms film adaptations that were popular in the Netherlands in the 70s (Help the Doctor is Drowning etc.). But then again different, it all has something very exotic as if it comes from a completely different world, but it is also a rural drama. Wonderful, thanks for the tip Rainer Werner!
