Very boring. Fukasaku seemed to be going in the right direction. Yo-yo was fun (needs revision) and X-cross came a long way! However, he misses the mark figuratively again. Just like with BR 2,

Incredibly boring shooting especially. The beginning seems nice but the repetition that rears its head changes your interest into pure boredom. No kills, all off-screen, and the story behind it is extremely weak and made inappropriately dramatic (genre should just be horror by the way).

Just avoid this work, there is no experience behind it at all. Not a single good idea, but just another variation on the ''play or die'' principle.

“Being scared” is completely beside the point here.

Fukasaku is really on the right track, but just like X-Cross he still falls a bit short to make a really good film. This film is also richly inspired by the anime/manga world, as evidenced by the rather strange story.

The film stands or falls mainly with the rat head. If you think the poster is cool, you'll be fine with this film, if you think it's rather ridiculous, there won't be much to experience. It's not a real horror otherwise. A bit of a shame that the promo pictures push the film a bit too much into the Nishimura box, because it doesn't belong there at all.

What you get is a bloody high school mystery with some crazy elements (like the rat head) and a dramatic background. I thought it all worked pretty well, only the acting was sometimes too poor. Fukasaku could have found better actors.

Furthermore, in terms of styling, the animation part/picture book is very stylish, the film itself could have been edited a bit smoother. Also, the camera work is sometimes just a bit too mediocre, just like the soundtrack that doesn't really add much. Fukasaku falls short in those details, which is a shame because the styling of Kuro Nezumi himself is great and carries almost the entire film.

A solid 3.5*
