Der Verlorene plot

The scholar Dr. Rothe (Peter Lorre) kills his fiancée in the war year 1942, when he finds out that she has sold the research results of his secret investigation to the enemy. Because of the importance of his research work for warfare, he escapes his sentence. After the war, the now presumed dead scientist who operates under a different name is still arrested for his crime. Rothe reflects on his weaknesses that left him susceptible to Nazi manipulation.

Dark, dark film with Peter Lorre in the director's chair and in the leading role that is inevitably reminiscent of "M".

Story structured in flashbacks that further dissects the figure of Dr Rothe and an equally dark spy environment.

Lorre actually saves a lot in this black-and-white production where the camera plays with shadows and lighting in an often poor, very working-class environment.

There really was no laughing matter. A 3.5 is actually a close call, in my opinion
