American Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) arrives in Paris a broken man after losing his wife, his job and his role as a father. A number of incidents ensure that he ends up in a shabby attic room in a filthy environment and has a job as a night watchman in a shed. Meanwhile, he tries without much success to write his second novel. Just when his life is about to crumble, the love of his life comes along in the form of Margit, an elegant and cultured Hungarian widow who has lived in Paris for years. However, she only wants to see him twice a week in an apartment in the 5th arrondissement and dodges questions about her work, her past and her life. Amorous Tom, however, notices that a dark force has entered his life and is retaliating against him. Meanwhile, the police become more and more interested in him and Tom ends up in an inevitable nightmare.
