De President plot

We see the Netherlands, five years after now. The Netherlands, tired of its endless chatter, confused in itself, decides to abolish the monarchy and parliamentary democracy and declare itself a republic. Then one sees a new folk hero in an asparagus-stinging young Moroccan and he becomes the first President of the Netherlands.

No laughter.

Despite the fact that in recent years there have been more and more Dutch productions that can easily compete with foreign countries, there are of course still lesser brothers. This is neither fish nor meat and – deadly for a comedy – hardly manages to generate a smile. Quite an achievement with such a cast.

Fail.

As a proponent of the multicultural society, I have to say how lousy it is represented in Dutch cinema. Cheerful Moroccans were still somewhat refreshing with Shouf Shouf Habibi, but now it has become a terribly annoying platitude. The same goes for the President, in which political satire is confused with corny puns and vulgar slapstick. Suffice it to say that my only laugh broke off when the main character fell into a puddle of water. It is also unbelievable that a once promising director like Erik de Bruyn has lent himself to this childish mess.
