Stand van de Sterren plot
"One family, three generations, facing globalisation in Indonesia"
Leonard Retel Helmrich followed one and the same Indonesian family (Sjamsudin) from the slums of Jakarta for 12 years, which resulted in the triptych 'Position of the Sun', 'Position of the Moon' and 'Position of the Stars'. Because raising his niece Tari is difficult for him, Bakti brings his mother back to the city. Tari grows up in a time when youth has become very open and she makes no secret of her views. The whole family sees in the bright Tari the only possibility to raise their own status and one day escape the slum of Jakarta. While the whole family struggles to collect tuition fees for Tari's studies, Tari prefers to spend her time and money on her friends and Jakarta's nightlife. Through her high school classmates, she comes into contact with the newly wealthy Indonesia, which is miles away from her life in the slum.
