"FROM THE PEN OF "THE CITADEL'S" BOLD AUTHOR!"
Story about miners in North East England in the 1930s. Davey is one of those miners and he thinks he can use his training against the heartless mining management. However, after he gets married, he has to accept a teaching job. Now standing somewhat on the sidelines, he watches the mines become even more insecure, relations deteriorate and management tries to enrich itself from the miners.

Very nice film about the life of miners and the fight against exploitation and with very successful scenes in the mine shafts.
A year later John Ford made a very similar film, "How Green was my Valley", which was a hit, but in my opinion this British "The Stars look down" is hardly inferior.

Good movie in which the son of a miner goes to college to be able to fight for the miners. This movie is at its best when it comes to social drama. The romantic part works a bit less well, despite the fact that the love triangle is worked out quite well (this is mainly because Margaret Lockwood's character is a bit annoying). The flooding in the mine certainly looks good for an 85 year old movie. A small 3.5 stars.
