Olivier is brilliant as a completely false crow; from head to toe. The sets and music are beautiful. Beautiful dream scene that confronts Richard with his demons.

The battle was wooden, but that also has its charm.

Good film adaptation of Richard III, which never escapes its theatricality. They are mainly highly theatrical actors who speak long dialogues and monologues while walking back and forth through rather bare sets. This is Shakespeare but not barely cinema. Olivier tries to make something of it cinematically here and there, for example by occasionally playing with the lighting or filming Richard's shadow at symbolic moments, but in general the attention is visually only grabbed by the colorful costumes . Only the coronation at the beginning and the appearance of the spirits before the final battle made an impression. Furthermore, it was quite a long session, which remains manageable thanks to the fascinating story and the wonderfully theatrical performances, with Olivier, Gielgud and Richardson being the standouts and Hardwicke slightly less so. Then give me Orson Welles' Shakespeare film adaptations (and Chimes at Midnight in particular). They manage to capture the spirit of Shakespeare not only in the acting, but also cinematically.

3*

Very dramatic, but I thought it fit with the theatricality of the title character, who delights in making broad use of his badness - he sometimes tries to placate people with a flattery that works, not in spite of, but because of, Gloucester's falsity, as if the person addressed sees that he is dealing with hypocrisy but still goes along with it because it is all presented in such a charming way. A cast full of big names helps to convey everything smoothly, although 160 minutes is a long time for a talk piece.
