The story is set in Lithuania after World War II. It depicts dramatic events in a small Lithuanian farming community where the people have to choose between the Soviets and a split called "brothers in the woods".

It is quite shocking that the IFFR audience does not appreciate this Lithuanian classic. A measly 2.1 
The shot of the runaway horses alone is enough. Come on! Didn't the narrator praise the magnificent camera work beforehand? Cinematographically a picture, fascinating characters and a denouement that is worth it. Boring is anything but. Perhaps a bit controversial in Soviet times. Nice is not the right word. The Lithuanian partisans, the brothers in the forest, are the bad guys, the robbers and rapists. The Soviets are of course the good guys, otherwise this beautiful film would never have seen the light of day and that would have been a shame.
