Touching guy creates his own dream world after a personal drama and takes really beautiful (!!!) photos of it. It is almost a pity that the documentary eventually gets away with him and Hogencamp finds himself again and gets lost in New York at an exhibition of his work.

3*.

Mark Hogancamp suffered severe brain damage when he was assaulted by a group of youths outside the cafe. He also lost most of his memory. Mark found a unique form of self-therapy in 'building' Marwencol, a fictional village in Belgium during the Second World War with several miniature dolls as residents and a heroic soldier as Mark's alter ego. By telling self-made stories with the help of a simple camera, he gives his own life structure and meaning. Family, friends and acquaintances tell us which character is based on them and we follow Hogancamp in the run-up to an exhibition of his work. An extra exciting event, because Mark is extremely shy of people. Malmberg tells the story through a clever combination of conversations and a selection from the thousands of photographs Hogancamp took to draw the parallels between the reality and the 'fiction' of Marwencol. Mark's story was made into a movie in 2018 as Welcome to Marwen starring Steve Carell.
