A mediocre drama film...

Reasonable story (not a pretty story)...

Decent acting...

Not good HD quality....

Too small widescreen...

Old fashioned recording, example car...

Great background sound/music (Dolby Digital)...

Not worth it...

Sober, rather grim drama about a lonely Chilean man working in a mortuary, against the backdrop of the 1973 coup. The cold, detached approach to the events strongly resembles the work of director Michael Haneke. So you have to like that, but I thought it was a strong, impressive film, carefully shot and excellently played.

It is September 1973 and the days are numbered for Chilean President Salvador Allende because General Augusto Pinochet is about to carry out a military coup. Mario [Alfredo Castro] works as a reporter for coroner Dr. Castillo [Jaime Vadell] and decides to investigate when his next-door neighbor (and burlesque dancer) Nancy [Antonia Zegers], whom he has a crush on, disappears without a trace, just like her brother [Santiago Graffigna] and Arturo [Ernesto Malbran]. As a result, he is confronted with the facts of what is happening in the world outside the isolated environment of the mortuary where he spends a large part of his life. The colorless design and stoic acting of Castro symbolize the repressive climate of Chile in 1973 and the long takes reinforce the sinister atmosphere, but that does not quite rhyme with the black-comic undertone that surfaces especially in the last quarter.
