And those Belgians were already much further than the Dutch, I can't say it enough. Where the Dutch liked to be forced to want to make a funny or smart film, the Belgians showed their "ability". That proves again with Alles Moet Weg, which subtly picks up a bit of several genres.

We follow Tony, who doesn't see a point in student life after all and has better things to do. He leaves his friend behind at university and with a cheap rusty bus he travels through Belgium to do "business" to earn money in a much faster and smarter way (read scamming, bribing, etc.) The party starts when he becomes a criminal Andreeke has to hitchhike. Beautifully portrayed by van den Begin, and what kind of character he portrays here; Good Will Hunting was from 1997, right? I do see some comparison. Only this one is not intelligent at all, but just pure rebellious and traumatized by the "banks". Because the "banks, bureaucrats, taxes etc" have done it all. I can't give them anything but a point. Furthermore, he stole the show as an unpredictable and totally insane person who first prefers to act and then thinks.

The build-up is also typically Belgian, or it seems that the Belgians like the desolate atmosphere, barren gloomy locations, dark, twisted humor, and above all twisted characters. Those scenes with those parents and their son who is getting married/married, was a real outlier! Or that bar owner trying to bribe Tony. And as you can expect, this can of course not end well in the long term.

And oh yeah, I enjoyed every second of this film. Really just a classic! A gloomy, raw, feel-good film.

5.0*

This film breathes Tom Lanoye. I've never read his novel 'Alles Moet Weg', but you can see all his hobbyhorses here: gay love, bold humour, dark brown Flemish people and the fanfare as a random but typical symptom of Flemish folk culture.

Everything Must Go looks a lot like a road movie, although the events on the road are strongly interspersed with all kinds of (hilarious) trifles. Stany Crets and Peter van den Begin are really strong in their roles and make the film a success. Enjoyed from start to finish the natural and razor-sharp dialogues (written by Lanoye and the men mentioned) and the wonderfully absurd situations, that's what this film really needs. Also a great soundtrack from Noordkaap.

Strong film by Jan Verheyen and a bit of a shame that he would then go on a completely different tour with films that might have been successful, but did not make a dent in a packet of butter in terms of content. I really appreciated Verheyen's Nacht van de Wansmaak - tour and accompanying compilation DVDs from a few years ago, in which the sewers of world cinema were dug out with (dis)taste.

Why, oh why did Verheyen deviate from the road to produce such films? In the meantime I saw almost everything from him and I came to the conclusion that average was the highest attainable. This Everything Must Go is by far his best film. Worth a top 10 for Belgian film even for me. Based on Tom Lanoye's book and if you get that right, you get fireworks. And it will.

Lots of memorable scenes interspersed with excellent dialogue, reflections and humor. Full credits for Lanoye's book, of course, but also for the excellent performances by Stany Crets and Peter van den Begin, who we saw at the time make a top duo together.

Lots of laughs with the film with the scenes in the cafe about the espresso machine, the disco bar scene between Van Assche and Blereau, the flower shop, the burglary, everything is the fault of the banks, and so on. The drama elements are also well developed with the destructive character of den Tony. In my opinion a topper, a cult film!
