Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord.

One of the few things that comes with faith that I consider universally meaningful is that revenge is something you should leave to others.

As a film, this is a bit archaic—it feels more like a stage production of something from shortly after Shakespeare, lacking his linguistic talent but also far removed from modern theatrical customs, and certainly from how a film works. Still, the moral is quite timeless, though it takes effort. But it still takes effort these days with this kind of subject matter. No, it's not a crime not to be a 'gentleman,' and someone finding you an annoying fellow isn't a valid reason for the death penalty.

It's a shame Hackman only has a small role—because I watched it for him, if only for the dubious honor of being able to tick off all the films he's worked on. Still, this film truly deserves to be seen, because the subject matter is just as relevant today as it was some sixty years ago when the film was released, and over a hundred years ago, where the story fits. Because is law now equal for everyone? I'm afraid not.

Everyone who advocates for the death penalty should watch this film. And everyone who thinks prison sentences are just a waste of money for society. And especially everyone who thinks trials are unnecessary because you can tell someone's guilt by their skin color. Don't just watch it, but do it like in A Clockwork Orange. I do have paperclips.
