The story, much better developed in Green Card (1990), isn't much to write home about.

The film is all about the legendary beauty of Hedy Lamarr, and fans of her will not be disappointed.

Johnny [Hedy Lamarr] has fled Austria after her father is assassinated. Now living in the US, she is having an affair with Barton Kendrick [Ian Hunter], a married publisher. When Johnny tells her immigration that she must return to Austria, she fears for her life. When she runs into a penniless writer [James Stewart] while walking through the park, she convinces him to make a deal that will allow her to stay in the US, but the deal causes complications for everyone involved.

Lamarr and Stewart are excellent in this romantic comedy with a strong dramatic edge. It's especially interesting to see Stewart in a not entirely sympathetic role that foreshadows the brilliant work he would do five years later in It's A Wonderful Life. Lamarr is a bit stiff, but holds his own in this entertaining, slightly godforsaken comedy that also benefits from strong support from Hunter, Verree Teasdale as Hunter's wife and Adeline De Walt Reynolds as Lamarr's grandmother.

sympathetic romantic comedy with a serious undertone, of course the viewer quickly knows who Johnny will ultimately choose, but this predictability is not a problem, unfortunately the execution is a bit rushed so that the love story structure does not come across as entirely credible, it all happens a bit too hastily.

Too bad because otherwise this story is basically enjoyable and the idea would be reused years later.
