Aurora plot
A man silently watches what resembles a family. The same man enters traffic with two homemade firing pins for a shotgun. The man is 42 years old and his name is Viorel. Struggling with obscure thoughts, he drives through the city to a destination known only to him.

More than 3 hours of raw realism, virtually plotless, without compelling visuals and we only find out very slowly who or what we are actually looking at.
A film that slowly gets under your skin and certainly offers no redemption.
Quite a few scenes in the film are masterfully acted pieces that could almost stand on their own.
Quite a gruelling sit, not an easy read, but it goes quite close to brilliant and continues to haunt for a while.

I had hoped for the film of the year, but unfortunately I could do very little with this. Did I miss something? I have nothing against a long playing time, but then something has to be done with it. And haven't many elements already been done much better by Mungiu and Porombuiu? Every now and then you apparently have a film where you really don't see it.

Viorel [Cristi Puiu] hobbles through Bucharest, doing odd jobs, chatting with the neighbors, arguing with shop girls, and casually shooting a few guys. Puiu's supposed answer to Chantal Akerman's equally soporific Jeanne Dielman is a good excuse for three hours of sleep. Who knows, you might just catch the explanation for all the nonsense, but I wouldn't set the alarm for it. Have a good night's sleep!
