Ramón has escaped from prison and is on his way to a mountain village where a treasure is buried. The road to it leads on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, which is why he disguises himself as a pilgrim. In the village everything seems deserted except for a few older people. When he spends the night with one of them, he notices that a centuries-long curse rests on the village, the Santa Compaña. The elders of the village are always looking for new people to lead a nocturnal procession of dead souls and the pilgrims who steadily pass by are defenseless prey. And so begins a fierce adventure for Ramon to escape the curse and get out of the village alive...

A fairly detailed animated film about a prisoner who arrives as a pilgrim in a strange village where it quickly becomes apparent that something strange is going on. Indeed grim and dark, but at the same time also incredibly atmospheric. The residents are also very strange by walking around with a large scythe, sniffing Ramón with a very large nose and a character that reminded me somewhat of Lurch from the Addams family. The film is described as horror, but I personally thought it leaned more towards mystery/thriller. It's a shame that the film isn't really exciting, because the story is certainly interesting.

A fun Spanish horror animated film that mainly relies on its mystery and atmospheric setting. Because it was quite impressive with the ominous distorted forest, the dilapidated village and the regularly rising fog.
The characters also looked very creepy. They were certainly not all mother's prettiest. Typical appearance such as a large nose, many wrinkles and evil eyes were common.
I found the story itself vague and not always well developed. A bit vague sometimes. But the setting and the many details make up for a lot.

Beautifully made stop-motion about the prison escapee Ramon [Carlos Blanco] who is on his way to the place where he buried a pile of diamonds and follows the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Through a ruse he is led off the path and ends up in a village where the local priest Don Cesáreo [Xosé Manuel Oliveira Pico] is holding several pilgrims for a dark religious ritual. The characters have little depth, but the original basic premise, the atmospheric design and the music (including by Philip Glass) make this a small feast for the senses.
