The Player plot

Inspired by the adventurous but also tragic life of his father, John Appel searches for the true nature of the gambler in the documentary. A film about gambling in the broadest sense of the word: from innocent games and jokes to fatal risks and incorrigible gambling addiction. Using portraits of a horse racing bookmaker, a poker player and a criminal, who have each mastered the art of winning and losing, John Appel paints a psychological portrait of his father, who was not just an ordinary gambler, but a real player.
