Stayin' Alive in Jo'burg plot
Downtown Johannesburg is one of the most violent areas in the world. Due to the lawlessness in this urban jungle, many NGOs do not dare to show themselves here. Most office buildings are empty or have been squatted and are inhabited by various groups of illegal Africans from neighboring countries. We follow Ismail Farouk, social geographer and one of the few who has access to these communities, on his search for solutions to make the city center clean, safe and liveable. Meanwhile, the city is preparing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. FIFA has drawn up a master plan to clean up parts of the city center so that the matches can be held without any problems, but will this succeed? And what consequences does this have for all those thousands of migrants?
