Chang is one of the busiest and most respected men in the village. He runs a doctor's office and engages in kung fu. And in the meantime he is also the head of an association that is responsible for the protection of the Buddha images. His son Chang Siu Tai is much less active. His son's laziness bothers Chang and on top of that he has to help the boy out of trouble on a regular basis. When more and more English settlers settle in China, the cultural difference causes the necessary problems. The English have no idea how important such a Buddha image is to the community. If they want to buy one for an Englishman's birthday, Chang has to decline. The English don't stop there and challenge him to a fight.
