El Ciudadano Ilustre plot

After refusing many prestigious awards worldwide, Daniel Mantovani, Nobel laureate in literature, accepts the invitation to visit his hometown. This is the city that inspired him to write all his books. This turns out to be the worst idea of his life. Expect the unexpected if you've used real people as characters in your novels.

Very entertaining film that, in addition to being comic and dramatic, I would also like to call it magical-realistic and post-modern, which is what I have done here. It is difficult to judge the film without considering the ending. Because what have you actually seen here? A true story, a fiction, or a made-up story based on true facts?

I personally think the latter. It was a book adaptation of Mantovani's last novel, which he presents at the end of the film. That makes some bizarre characters (Roque, Antonio) and the strange retreat in which all the semi-extras suddenly stand on the side of the road a lot more believable, precisely because you know that it is (half?) made up.

The same applies to the rather lame way in which that village is depicted. That is exactly the criticism Mantovani receives. I sometimes thought that was a bit over the top, typical of village leavers to write about their native land. Had it been the director's choice, I would have blamed him. With that double meaning - it is the writer who thinks that way - it suddenly becomes a very sensible choice.

By the way, I thought it was a great movie even without that ending. Verhoeven: I am in my mid-thirties and drink an average of 1.6 cappuccinos per week.

Great movie. A nice story and I found it very funny at times. It looked nice and the acting is good. By the way, I'm not a senior and I never slurp/drink cappuccino. 3.5*

Actually, Montavani just wants to write. He's an author, right? For the rest he wants to be left alone. Let that change when he wins the Nobel Prize for Literature. The somewhat introverted, gruff, but eloquent author watches it with dismay. He declines dozens of requests to come as a guest, honorary member, speaker, etc. He does not want to function as an object that is used and, in his view, abused at the expense of a promotional talk or even propaganda.

He does have a point and I understand his reasoning. It just doesn't make you popular. But he cannot resist the lure of his hometown of Salas, even though it has been 40 years since he was there.

Maybe he shouldn't have done that. Everything he feared comes to fruition. The film is a nice satire with successful situations here and there. An impoverished region with twisted characters. Entertaining enough to keep me interested. With a wonderfully dry Oscar Martinez too.
