In the summer of 1937, Emanuel, in his twenties, goes to a sanatorium on the Black Sea coast to treat tuberculosis in his leg. The treatment consists of painful spinal taps that keep him confined to his bed. Little by little he gets used to the sadness of his new life and discovers that there is still a beautiful life inside the sanatorium. He makes friends and engages in conversations, mainly of a political nature. He even gets into a romantic relationship.
