Every colonial regime has its own history. The same goes for Portugal and Angola. The film is set sometime in the early 1960s during and before the outbreak of the Angolan War of Independence and follows the struggles of Angolan militants.

Sambizanga refers to the neighborhood in Luanda where there was a Portuguese prison where many Angolan militants were tortured and killed. Domingos, a revolutionary, is arrested by Portuguese colonial officials and taken to prison in Sambizanga. The film also focuses on his wife Maria, who goes in search of her husband to discover what happened to her husband, not really knowing what his part is as a freedom fighter.

Beautiful and well portrayed. Especially if you look at the period and where it comes from.
