Return to Sleepaway Camp plot

"Kids can be so mean."

The stingy camp owner Frank runs the summer camp Camp Manabe with young Ronnie. Everything seems to be going well, until several guests from the camp suddenly start disappearing. Ronnie has flashbacks to Camp Arawak, where he worked a long time ago and where all kinds of teenagers were gruesomely murdered. Would that happen again now?

Yeh. It is certainly fun, a return to Sleepaway Camp and even the atmosphere feels 80's at times, but whoever thought that the bullied boy had to be so over the top has ruined the film. Not that this would still have been a good film, but that boy is a real nuisance. Side characters are nicely one-dimensional, as befits a slasher like this and the ending is a pleasant surprise, but you could have expected better from the maker of the original.

2*

Jeez.

Always nice when the director of part 1 returns to his own series, but in Hiltzik's case this is also his second film ever... with 38 years in between. That's how it feels a bit. As if he had been put in the safe for 38 years and suddenly had to make a new part, but in 2008. The mix of the 80s and the new millennium is therefore very uncomfortable.

Worse is the terrible tone of this film. Some teasing and teasing is part of it, but this is half terror. The bullies are horrible jerks, the bullied are also completely insufferable and the leaders are also horrible characters. The lightness of previous parts is completely absent here, why is completely unclear to me.

Murders remain as lame as anything. You hardly see anything, except the aftermath. For example, Hiltzik simply cuts the rat murder to 5 seconds of black screen, that's a nice horror. And then I'll just keep quiet about the twist, right? I thought the lousy makeup was part of the amateurism of the film, but no, apparently that's Angela's disguise :') .

Please let this series die a silent death. It's somehow quite amazing how you can make 5 films based on one successful scene (the end of the first part), but after all those lame sequels I've had enough with the Sleepaway Camp series.

Director Robert Hiltzik takes charge of the series once again, 25 years after the original film. In all those years of his absence, he has certainly not worked on improving his cinematic skills, because in terms of quality it all looks very poor. The murders are pieced together, the acting is very substandard and you can of course see the plot twist coming from a mile away. Only Michael Gibney comes away with a passing grade, because he really puts all his energy into his role and gives the full 110%. In addition, Hiltzik manages to set a decent pace and the constant vulgarity is also entertaining. I didn't have to make any effort to sit through every minute (because there's always something going on), but that doesn't change the fact that overall it just doesn't look right. It's a good thing that no new parts have been added to the series, although I think a reboot could still be fun.
