The Walls Came Tumbling Down plot

"Listen beautiful. This is no parlor game... you are playing with MURDER!"

Broadway columnist Gilbert Archer pushes to investigate the death of an old friend, a priest. Police insist the priest hanged himself, but Archer disagrees. Gilbert plays a private detective with wealthy Boston Patricia Foster. Both soon come across two rare Bibles and a painting depicting the demise of Jericho. These are in the possession of the cunning art dealer Ernst Helms. Helms sends his criminal accomplices Matthew Stoker and the dodgy Reverend George Bradford after both amateur private detectives.

A decent B-mystery film that takes its cues from The Maltese Falcon in a rather obvious way: Lee Bowman is a journalist who tackles villains in such a way that he might as well be a private investigator, his last name is that of Sam Spade's colleague who meets his end early in The Maltese Falcon, Lee Patrick is Bowman's secretary just as she was Bogie's, and when J. Edward Bromberg shows up in Archer's office, he does a perfect imitation of Peter Lorre's Joel Cairo. But hey, the story is told smoothly and with beautiful photography, and George Macready is always a fine heavy. Lead actor Lee Bowman bears a resemblance to William Powell, though lacking the mobility and charisma to become a star (a bit like Dana Andrews). It's no surprise that Marguerite Chapman never made it to the A-list, but both are excellent performers for this material, and the 82 minutes fly by. Oh, and is Chapman really saying, "I'm sure this will prove the beginning of a beautiful friendship"?
