The Man Beneath plot

Indian scientist Dr Chindi Ashutor (Hayakawa) falls in love with Scottish Kate Erskine. Her sister Mary is engaged to Ashutor's college friend James Bassett. Kate refuses to marry Ashutor; she fears the social consequences of a mixed marriage. Meanwhile, Bassett becomes under the influence of a cult; Ashutor intervenes, but is unable to prevent a death. The honored scientist returns - without any illusions about British class society - to India.
