Already in the grandiose opening scene, in which a mother and her daughter disappear in the distance against a metropolitan backdrop of a shopping street full of honking cars and passing crowds of people, 'Sieranevada' (2016) proves to be a different kind of film. More subtle, less direct, not polished with filters or neat lighting and no neat dialogues with a clear goal. In the rest of the film, actors are rarely positioned opposite each other; we see them from behind or from the side, in extreme close-ups, or interlocutors just disappear from view. The narrative is also by no means streamlined, because the woman and child in the opening, for example, no longer appear to play a major role in the rest of the story. Even the central figure, Lary (Mimi Branescu), promptly disappears from the stage to take a pee, while the mother and child from the opening play less of a role than the lengthy announcement suggests.

What we as viewers do not see, hear or experience is more important than the everydayness that is shown - all small and large histories, ideologies and historical movements. The faltering, difficult conversations and the numerous conflicts not only hide their own traumas, but they reveal subcutaneous tensions to the violent histories of a Romania that once knew state communism. And the waiting, the endless waiting, for something or someone to bring clarity to a fragmented, globalized, late-capitalist world. While eyes are still on an America that once shone on the horizon as the cultural and economic bright spot, what are these characters left with their own identity now that its presence on the world stage is unclear!?

Very special and remarkable film that I do not want to judge too negatively because it contains very good scenes in which you wonder how they manage to reproduce such an atmosphere, but I still think it is all a bit "too".
Read a lot and had little time to think about what was being said and sometimes it was difficult to discover who was actually speaking, which made it difficult to dissect characters and story (?).
Anyway, a case of family gathering where no wrinkles are ironed out. On the contrary, no one is pleased and socutions abound and pity must rival gloating;
Funny actually, even sometimes ridiculous with the humor through it like Sandra (who was it, wasn't it?) who absolutely wanted to close the door which no one respected, the unexpected, drunk-sick visitor, the struggles around the food, the crazy scenes with the way-too-big pants, Lary's weeping over a knick-knack from the past.... It's all entertaining, but three hours seemed like a very wide margin to me.

Welcome to the grumpy world of short fuses and long toes. I know there are such people, but I prefer to avoid them with a wide berth. I should have done the same with this pretentious film (with much of the same). It would have saved me an awkward afternoon.
