Asylum plot

The film follows a number of prospective freshmen who attend an orientation course at their university for a summer. They discover that their student home was once a notorious asylum. Once the semester has started, they are confronted with traumas they once experienced in their past. The ghost of a malevolent doctor who previously served in the same asylum and tortured the patients there now terrorizes them.

I tried this film once, and it wasn't bad, but not much more than that. Nothing special at all. Not really exciting or scary, but not really boring either. Thankfully, the running time isn't too long.

The cast isn't that special either.

Certainly not a must-see, but not super bad either, just not all that special.

I rewatched it today and I think it's quite entertaining. It's nice that it plays on certain fears. That keeps it suspenseful. It's a decent watch, but it's not truly horror. It's gory in places, but that's all.

A popcorn horror film with poor acting and a lot of fanfare pretending to be grisly suspense. Director David R. Ellis focuses primarily on sound, so there's a constant sense of grandeur in Asylum. Although this effectively speeds up the pace, it also leaves absolutely no room for the tension to shine. Add to that a plethora of absurd scenes, and you have a film that many viewers will barely take seriously. While the pace works to the advantage, and there's always something going on, Ellis proves himself a mediocre director with little control over his projects.
