See You Next Tuesday plot

"You always hate the ones you love"

Mona, a quirky girl who has an unwanted pregnancy, loses her job as a cashier at the local supermarket. Not long after, her mother May, who is recovering from an alcohol addiction, more or less forces her to move in with her bitter lesbian sister Jordan and his girlfriend Sylve. Mona's relationship with her sister is just as toxic as that with her mother, and it quickly creates tension within the four walls of their already cramped apartment.

The film opens with a static image. We see the main character Mona looking into the camera as if she is in a trance. It looks like a photo if it weren't for the fact that she blinks her eyes every now and then. When the opening credits end and the music stops, Mona remains motionless for a moment and then suddenly turns around as if she is stepping back into reality. Mona moves in two worlds. An idyllic fantasy world and the dirty reality of everyday life in which she is pregnant and has no husband.

The beginning is not bad and offers hope for a film in which the registers of beautiful drama, madness, absurdism and comedy are nicely pulled open. Unfortunately, See You Next Tuesday is not the film I was hoping for. After the intro follows an annoying film populated by annoying characters. In the long hour and a half that follows we meet depressed, addicted, egoistic, unbalanced, short-sighted and especially very whiny women who mostly show their great presence with a lot of screaming.

All this misery is revealed in a confused script that drags on from crisis to crisis. In all the crisis violence the story completely collapses. The story does not gain a foothold between all the empty babble and shouting of the characters. It is precisely in a constellation with neurotic, self-absorbed, lethargic and noisy characters that a tightly framed story is needed to keep things from getting out of hand. No, it is not.

It might all be more digestible if the maker would throw in some self-mockery or humor. However, I could not find any humor or perspective. See You Next Tuesday is an annoying film with very annoying characters. Absolutely no comedy. But a great source of irritation. See You Next Tuesday is, by the way, a veiled use of language for the word cunt. And that word is the perfect title for such a shitty film.
