An intriguing blend of psychiatric drama and early noir with a formidable villain (Basil Rathbone) whose presence completely overshadows both the intended victim (Ellen Drew) and the true hero (journalist John Howard). There's a strange twist halfway through when the unapproachable Rathbone suddenly turns out to be truly in love, and then the film loses some of its momentum, although the director effectively maintains the momentum of the thriller plot right up to the very end. The most striking aspect of the film, however, is the unspoken yet undeniable homosexual relationship between Rathbone and his accomplice (Martin Kosleck), without any hint of moral reprehensibility attached to it (aside from the relevant fact that they are both murderers). Ultimately, this film offers enough elements to remain interesting, and I can never get enough of Basil Rathbone (whose character, by the way, is anything but insane).
