Le Fils de Joseph plot

Vincent, an adolescent, was lovingly raised by his mother, Marie, but she has always refused to reveal his father's name. Vincent discovers that he is a selfish and cynical Parisian publisher named Oscar Pormenor. The young man increasingly has plans for a violent revenge, but his meeting with Joseph, a somewhat marginal man, will change his life and that of his mother.

The opening scene with the sadistic torture in a way sets the tone of this film that shows a lot of cool indifference among the characters with very distant dialogues on top.
Strange, but despite the often slow development, it is a film that captivates you.
"I don't love anybody," says Vincent, but towards the end there's a total turnaround. Vincent has discovered that his father is a repulsive character from a spoiled environment who has no respect for anyone but himself, which allows him to find friendship and even make someone happy: his mother.
It is not immediately clear to me what lesson can be learned from this film, unless perhaps reality is sometimes enough to turn one's back on prejudices and a pessimistic way of life.

Seen on TV5, and I associate that channel a bit with this type of French films: simple production, but pretentious in design. Mathieu Amalric is also

an actor who fits in.

Intentionally wooden dialogue and vague Bible references do not make it a pleasant experience.
