In 1977, director Barbet Schroeder and cinematographer Nestor Almendros entered the universe of the world's most famous primate, Koko. Koko, a three-year-old female gorilla, is taken from the San Francisco Zoo to Stanford University, by Dr. Penny Patterson, for a controversial experiment - she will be by Dr. Patterson learning the archetype of communication, the sign language.
