Mademoiselle Fifi plot

"How much should a woman give for her country?"

During the Franco-Prussian War, the young French laundry girl Elisabeth Rousset travels in a carriage in occupied France. A valiant attempt by producer Val Lewton to branch out into the artistic realm after his successes in suggestive horror (Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie, The Leopard Man), but unfortunately, this film wasn't a success. Cheaply made and with a cast where only Simone Simon's name really stands out, but the evident care with which everything was filmed and the serious approach as a propaganda parable still make this a film that perhaps resonates better eighty years later than it did then (though it should be noted that the main character's profession in Guy de Maupassant's original story was of considerably lesser caliber). Small-scale but interesting; the only person involved in this production who would go on to have a serious career in Hollywood was the director, but it was a very successful one, including Oscars for West Side Story and The Sound of Music. (This film is currently available on YouTube.)

By the way, another funny detail: the title is not the name of Simone Simon's character, as you might expect, but the nickname of the Prussian officer (played by Swiss actor Kurt Kreuger) that he got from his fellow officers because he keeps saying "Fi fi, donc!"
