Caterinetta, secretly in love with the injured Garibaldino, asks Mariella to care for him temporarily while she rushes around a medic. Mariella, who knows what love means, agrees. Charming director De Sica creates an enjoyable film here that loses some of its real charm due to the final part in adventurous Far West style.

Subcutaneously you feel the light derision of Sica on institutions and moral values of that time.

The narration is neat, makes it more interesting and the roles are well played.

Everything has already been said in the excellent review of Pippo Il Buffone. Is a light and pleasantly watchable film that looks back through a flashback to the turbulent time of 1860, shortly before the unification of Italy. The progressive-minded followers of Garibaldi versus the conservative old nobility is an important motif throughout this story, without neglecting the romance and humor. I thought the ending set back 60 years was very successful. De Sica's last film before he switched to the well-known neo-realist dramas, which I prefer.
