The story opens with the beginning of The old dark house, but then shifts to The cat and the canary, and the film maintains that pace throughout, although it is a pity that the large amount of time given to the comic dialogues between the theatre producer and his secretary comes at the expense of the tension and mystery. Oh well, this film is 90 years old by now, so there is not much real tension left, but the pace and the setting still make this a very entertaining genre film for the fan of black-and-white-thirties-spooky-houses-comedy-thrillers – you know who you are. And Eve Sothern (Beatrice) is occasionally captured breathtakingly beautifully.
