Marfa si Banii plot
Ovid lives in Constanța and hopes to run a more luxurious kiosk than his mother in the future. In order to earn a fixed amount of money for this, he takes a simple assignment from a local mafioso: bring a bag of medicines to Bucharest. He must travel alone and cannot take breaks. Ovid does not take this instruction very seriously and that soon turns out to be a mistake.

The film contains a scene in which the protagonists sit listlessly looking out over the deserted landscape during a short break from their van. That feeling also came over me when I saw this debut film by Cristi Puiu about two friends who – sealed from a bored girlfriend – drive for hours through the desolate interior of Romania to deliver illegal medicines to the capital on behalf of a local mafia boss. Apart from a scary incident with gangsters, very little happens along the way. Then an hour and a half is a long sitting.
