Elwin Bixby (James Cagney) is a Broadway producer who has quite a few setbacks, but who is full of ideas. He goes to West Point to direct the annual Military Cadets musical, after which he decides to use it as a tryout for a Broadway show. But first he must get the talented Tom Fletcher out of the army. Fortunately, Elwin has the right bait, the beautiful Hollywood star Jan Wilson (Doris Day).
