The Shuttered Room plot

"There are some doors that should never be opened..."

A young woman arrives on a small island on the east coast of the United States. She has inherited a dilapidated mill there, but is unaware of the horrors she will experience. The old mill adjoins an 18th-century building, from which sometimes bizarre cries sound. An old lady tries to hide the case, but the visitor will nevertheless discover the dark secret hidden behind a closed door in the attic.

The film is a big disappointment and looks very dated. Reed cannot save the film, but a beautiful young Carol Lynley.

Excellent occasionally rowdy horror film with several good and well executed scenes. Oliver Reed

class again as a nasty but actually also a bit pathetic character. Also beautiful images of the landscape, according to the story in the States, but the film was probably made in British

Britain. The film is not really scary, but at least offers some nice 'creepy' entertainment.

Nice film in which a couple not only has to deal with a dark threat, but also with a group of provocative young people. The story is divided into small episodes that always focus on a confrontation with the couple. The first part of the film mainly focuses on that. At this stage the film is mainly a psychological stalking drama. Later in the film, the dark threat becomes more and more embedded in the story.

Quite nice how the characters are designed. Oliver Reed in particular, in his role as the unkempt and hazy leader of the group of young people, is doing well. The film has a nice setting. A rocky island with beautiful locations (filmed in Cornwall), of which an old neglected wood mill is the most beautiful. The atmosphere is full of unease. Ominous. Feels good.

The plot with the dark threat is not very successful. The plot is somewhat related and does not cause much uneasiness. A touch of suspense that is generated through perspective is the highest achievable. The plastic threat does not create any tension. Rather, a feeling of pity came over me.

The Shuttered Room is a bit of an odd one out. In British 60s horror films we are used to darkness, fog and weathered castles. This film is less pompous, but still creates an excellent ominous atmosphere, has intriguing characters and also has a pleasant jazzy score, which provides the film with some extra menace. So great movie.
