I've been on MM for more than ten years and my path has crossed the film Aguirre several times. In the quips, often tipped, often in the tops. It proves that this rather modest film has a solid fan base. Herzog is a passionate filmmaker, and shooting a low-budget film on the spot in Peru was quite an adventurous undertaking. Still, I didn't think it was a high flyer.

The story is not very big and was well known to me: searching for the Eldorado while the Spaniards only find horror and despair in the forest is not new. And the film does not say more. Aguirre eventually finds his Eldorado: power and glory. A recurring motif in all stories about the conquistadors. Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" also came to mind, but it may well be that Conrad got his inspiration for it from the Spaniards. But Herzog doesn't care about historical facts. What matters to him is the overall atmosphere.

More impressive than the story, I found the visual. With his mini-budget, Herzog managed to visualize everything in a big way: whether it's forests, the trip on the river or the huge raft, it is going to impress. Add Kinski's raw head and the picture is complete. For me sometimes too minimalistic to really make a topper out of it.

After Rossellini (and earlier Peckinpah, Truffaut, Sirk, Wilder etc.), Herzog is the next subject of a director's cycle from my large pile of unwatchable DVDs and Blu Rays. I had seen 7 Herzogs, that goes to a small 20 when I'm done.

Immediately started with a film that is so legendary that I already knew a bit more about it than most films I didn't see. I can name 25 films that were heavily influenced by this film, especially now that I've finally seen it. The earthy and the raw and actually also the compact (the film was over before I knew it) contrast so wonderfully with the big story. The sight of that great raft on which everything the conquistadors value. The beautiful opening and ending scene. A film to return to often.

Long left aside because of the stills that didn't appeal to me. Anyway, I looked and I have to say that it doesn't do much for me. The images are already nicer than the photos, but it feels very dated and has a rough style that doesn't immediately appeal to me. It never gets under the skin unfortunately. There is potential in it and I can imagine that the film appeals to people. It's a somewhat unique film style. But I'm not much with it unfortunately.
