The Last Englishman plot

A British soldier, who returned from the war somewhat bonkers, becomes a hero. He claims to be the proudest Englishman in the world. He mainly earned his fame by single-handedly conquering a small French village in World War II. But he gained real fame through his visit to England's oldest prison for attempting to shoot its authoritative commander.
