Land van Lubbers plot

In Land van Lubbers, the now 76-year-old Ruud Lubbers takes the viewer along to the most important events from his past: the oil crisis, economic reforms, demonstration cruise missiles and the birth of the Euro. Lubbers thinks it's time to take stock and that's why he agrees to four long interviews for a lecture hall of students. King of the inimitable 'Lubberian' answers with which he didn't say anything he didn't want to, he is surprisingly clear in these interviews.

Hoe krijg je politiek zo oninteressant mogelijk? Zorg dat het 'de menselijke kant' uitmelkt met eindeloze passages waarin de politicus tijd doorbrengt met zijn gezin. De grote politieke hangijzers hangen als los zand aan elkaar en dienen vooral om her en der een cameo erin te gooien. Iedereen zit namelijk te wachten op slappe karikaturen van François Mitterrand, Margaret Thatcher, Koningin Beatrix. Giet het tevens in een gortdroge verhaalconstructie waarin 'scherpe studenten' de oud-premier ondervragen. Gelukkig eindigt het met een zinderende beschouwing over de Euro en een fittie tussen Elco Brinkman en de Lubster. Topamusement!

How do you make politics as uninteresting as possible? Make it 'milk the human side' with endless passages where the politician spends time with his family. The big political issues hang together like loose sand and mainly serve to throw in a cameo here and there. Everyone is waiting for weak caricatures of François Mitterrand, Margaret Thatcher, Queen Beatrix. Also pour it into a bone-dry story construction in which 'sharp students' interrogate the former prime minister.
