"Graduating was the easy part"

After Will (Miles Teller) and Jillian (Anna Kendrick) graduate from college, they struggle to get a job despite being highly qualified. As their financial situation becomes increasingly tense, Will is forced to take on work far below his qualifications. Meanwhile, Jillian remains a job seeker, but slowly but surely she begins to appreciate the free 'lifestyle' that is possible with unemployment.

Quite annoying.

But comedies based on some kind of hang-up often do that. Especially when the theme doesn't really mean that much. But everyone in this movie is struggling hard to get a job, social status, expectations and obligations ... like good social zombies should behave.

Throw in a few different clichés so that each job story is a little different and it can apparently pass as a comedy. Too bad the jokes are rarely funny, that almost no one except Kendrick has a talent for comedy and that the drama is completely lame.

What remains are some stupid moral lessons and a film that can probably give people who are about to graduate a lot of unnecessary stress. These kinds of comedies are more annoying and whiny than funny, can't really be the intention I think.

1.5*

Made in 2012 and left on the shelf for four years, despite the impressive cast. No wonder this is a mediocre work with an unbalanced tone. It revolves around a number of recently graduated, ambitious young people with an unwavering belief in their own abilities who, however, do not get the dream job they expected. It remains stuck between comedy and drama, which means it never really becomes funny and you can hardly take the problems described seriously. It all hangs somewhere in between and that is never good.

Where it initially seems to be about a couple who just graduated, but have trouble finding a job, the theme is actually interwoven with all the characters. Young people have trouble finding a job because they have little to no experience. Older people have trouble finding a job because of their age. And some are lucky. Personally, I think Bryan Cranston is a bit too good for a film like this, but he does a great job otherwise of course. Although the two main actors play a couple, and otherwise act well, I completely miss the chemistry. Don't expect a highlight from this film, and no memorable funny scenes, but it is entertaining if there is nothing else on TV. Interesting fact: this film was already shot in 2012, but only released in 2016.
