In 1944 the German soldier Alex Kielberg is sent to the Eastern Front. Shortly afterwards he is reported as killed in action. His young widow Luise and their son Michael face a hard struggle for existence. During the time of the Berlin blockade, Luise falls in love with the American general Philip Turner. But then her long-dead husband Alex suddenly returns. He appears to have been held as a prisoner of war in Russia all those years. Now Luise has to make an almost impossible choice...
