US Air Force Sergeant Chuck Brennan (Karl Malden) has always hated that Colonel Jim Herlihy (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) playboy. It all started in Korea, where he first met him and the Colonel, according to Chuck, was guilty of the deaths of some crew members. Now, several years later, Jim Herlihy turns out to be the new commander of Chuck's airbase and Chuck is about to be discharged from service. To make matters worse, Jim also has a crush on Chuck's daughter Lois (Natalie Wood).
