China, 1880. The north of China has been ravaged by drought for several years. The young woman Lalu is sold to a trafficker by her desperate father and poor farmer. That way Lalu's father can pay the landowner's taxes. The trafficker ships Lalu along with other young Chinese women to Chinatown in San Francisco. Lalu is bought by the Chinese saloon owner Hong King from Idaho, who gives her the name 'China Polly'. Lalu has to entertain the local prospectors in the saloon. Lalu threatens suicide if she also has to work as a prostitute. The vulnerable Lalu befriends American Charlie, with whose help she seems to find her own way in a hostile environment.
