Eyes closed or open, I didn't see that twist coming, partly because I'm never really that focused on it, partly because I was more focused on the beautiful luxurious sets (often with multiple levels), the opulent decorations and the sleek costumes. Does the form make everything right for me? Of course not, but with a mystery like this, attention tends to wander, and almost as if it was Murnau's intention, the background turns out to be a visual feast, as if it were a beautiful series of atmospheric paintings (and I'll just accept the model of the ending - the fact that you can see in the wide shots how the mountain in the background has a neat shadow is almost comical). Nice dream sequences, and the library where the murdered husband is ploughing through his spiritual reading in the flashbacks is impressive. Actually quite curious about what the spoken version 15 years later would be like - I see that it is available in its entirety on YouTube, so maybe I should sit down for that. This version was by no means a masterpiece, but it was certainly visually interesting enough to keep you interested.
