Oyû-Sama plot
Shinnosuke is introduced to Shizu, a potential suitor. However, he falls in love with Oyu, Shizu's sister. She is a widow. However, Oyu is not allowed to marry and has to raise her son as he is the future head of his family. Oyu tries to convince Shinnosuke and Shizu to marry each other so she can be near Shinnosuke herself.

Mizoguchi often revolves around the dilemma between passion and duty, with the pressure of societal decency usually trumping personal desires. Shinnosuke is expected to marry the youngest sister, though he initially is interested in the eldest, a widow with a child. The youngest, however, is no less attractive, but primarily shy and introverted. She is also inclined to sacrifice her own happiness for her older sister, for whom she displays a devotion bordering on the incestuous. This love triangle leads to inner conflict for all involved.
The camera frequently remains still for well-chosen compositions, often with a window or open door in the background to create space. Spring blossoms and the rolling sea provide sparkling images, interspersed with dramatic dialogue. Japanese tradition is present with kimonos and tea ceremonies. The moon recalls the popular belief in nature gods. The eldest sister plays the koto, a Japanese zither played with thimbles.
