This sounds much cooler on paper than it actually is. The overkill of directors is clearly visible in the film. Think of this as a series of short films glued together.

The result is an incoherent whole that jumps from one subject to another in terms of atmosphere and plot twists. It is easy to follow, and that is actually the most positive thing I can say about it. Although some sets and designs are cool, it just doesn't work. Some short parts seem to want to cram a complete feature film into a small 10 minutes, with all the disadvantages that entails.

Too bad, because on paper this could have been a very cool Band production.

Revisited after years on the bluray of the Arrow Empire Scream boxset. There are 3 cuts on it, I watched the longer pre-release version. Formerly known as Ragewar: The Challenges of Excalibrate.

Delicious 80's pulp with a soundtrack and special effects to match.

Computer programmer Paul and his girlfriend Gwen are sucked into a virtual world by the dark sorcerer Mestema (Richard Moll from “The Sword & The Sorcerer”), who calls himself “The Dungeonmaster”. He is looking for a worthy opponent and therefore he kidnaps Gwen and Paul has to complete seven assignments to win her back. He is helped by his personal computer X-CaliBR8, which he wears as a bracelet. The seven assignments consist of:

- Ice Gallery with classic monsters such as Mummy, Wolfman, Jack the Ripper and a Samurai.

- Demons of the Dead with leader Ratspit.

- Heavy Metal battle during a performance by WASP under the song Tormentor.

- Stone Canyon Giant a valley with dwarves who worship a giant statue.

- Slasher arrested by police for a murder he didn't commit.

- Cave Beast fight against a monster in a dark cave.

- Desert Pursuit literally a ripoff of Mad Max with ditto vehicles.

A delicious snack in just 75 minutes.

Paul is a computer nerd who prefers to spend his time with his homemade supercomputer rather than with his fiancée, Gwen. Then, the devilish magician Mestema challenges him to take him on. The prize is Gwen, kidnapped by Mestema. The film follows Paul as he battles all sorts of monsters in seven segments, each set in a different fantasy world. Science meets Swords & Sorcery.

It's quite enjoyable to follow Paul on his journey through seven fantasy worlds. The seven segments, each directed by a different director, aren't very long, and vary enough to keep you entertained. For example, we see Paul battling a stop-motion Golem, fighting Zulu warriors, and meeting Jack the Ripper. We also see him exposed to the temptations of a few scantily clad women and at a concert by the heavy metal band W.A.S.P.

The directors responsible for the content of Ragewar aren't exactly renowned. The segments are by the likes of David Allen (Puppet Master II (1990)), Ted Nicolaou (Subspecies (1991)), and Charles Band (The Creeps (1997)). In Ragwar, they direct B-movies. Sloppy direction. Bad effects. Not great acting. Essentially, Ragwar is a mindless film with uninteresting characters. A film without any real suspense.

Still, it's fun. Trash appeal is abundant, and the videos are full of wacky ideas and events. The most absurd, and therefore perhaps the most amusing, aspect of the film is the dialogue. Mestema: "Say the word and it ends!" to which Paul replies: "The word is forget it!" Or this one: "I reject your reality and substitute my own." Laughable, man!
